The Family 734 Radio Run Contest is all about discovering artists who bring something real to the stage. Among the finalists is Shiggins, an Ann Arbor artist whose music is rooted in storytelling, emotion, and authenticity. While some artists chase trends, Shiggins has carved out a lane built on substance. With just three years into making music, he’s already developed a style that stands out in the 734 scene. He describes his sound as storytelling-driven underground hip hop, drawing influence from artists like MF DOOM, Open Mike Eagle, Danny Brown, Aesop Rock, and even musicians outside of hip hop like Tigran Hamasyan and Alex Yoder. That range shows up in his music, where lyricism and perspective take center stage.
For the Radio Run Contest, Shiggins is bringing a record inspired by an unexpected place for a hip hop artist, a graduate course at the University of Michigan. That influence reflects how his music often pulls from real-life experiences and intellectual spaces, turning them into something creative and relatable. At the core of his work is a message that feels both simple and necessary:
“Don’t take life too seriously when you don’t have to, be authentic, and embrace joy when you find it.”
That mindset carries directly into his latest release, the EP “Therapeutic Music.” The project is deeply personal, built from moments where music became a way to process and release emotion.
“Each of these 5 tracks were written during some of the most emotionally intense moments in my life to sublimate and process the emotions I was struggling with at the time.”
The EP leans more into a singer-songwriter approach, showing range beyond traditional hip hop, while still keeping elements of sharp lyricism throughout.
Beyond the music itself, Shiggins represents something bigger when it comes to the local scene. For him, being part of the 734 isn’t just about where you’re from, it’s about how you show up for others. He describes the community as one where artists support each other, build together, and actually connect beyond the stage. A place where feedback is meant to sharpen, not tear down, and where creativity thrives because people are genuinely invested in each other’s growth. That spirit is exactly what the Family 734 Radio Run Contest is built on. When it comes to why fans should come out and see him perform, Shiggins keeps it real: If you’re looking for entertainment with substance, he’s someone you need to see live.
Fans can follow Shiggins on Instagram @shiggins_visions and check out his music on Bandcamp to stay connected.
As the contest approaches, he steps onto the stage representing not just Ann Arbor, but a style of artistry that values honesty, creativity, and community.
Four artists. One stage. And a chance to see who can truly move the room.
